Automatic discounts or discount codes: which fits your Shopify offer?
Compare Shopify automatic discounts, discount codes, and public cart coupon lists. Choose a promotion method based on who should discover and apply the offer. What changes for the shopper?
Shopify applies an automatic discount when the cart and customer satisfy its conditions. A code-based promotion requires the code to be applied. Coupon List Lite adds a way to discover and apply selected public codes in the cart; it does not create automatic discounts.
See Shopify's automatic discount documentation for supported types and eligibility requirements.
| Approach | Shopper experience | Merchant consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic discount | Eligible savings apply without choosing a code. | Explain the campaign conditions even when no code is needed. |
| Code shared through a campaign | The shopper brings a code from an email, partner, or other campaign. | Keep restricted or personalized codes out of public offer lists. |
| Public cart coupon list | The shopper sees selected offers and applies a suitable code. | Curate the list and explain the conditions for each offer. |
Three campaign examples
A weekend offer for every qualifying cart
Consider an automatic discount when the merchant's intent is to give the same saving to all eligible shoppers. Adding a coupon selection step may be unnecessary. Use clear storefront messaging so customers understand what qualifies.
A personal recovery or loyalty code
Keep the code in its intended communication channel. Publishing it in a cart list would expose it to other visitors, even if Shopify later rejects their attempt to use it. Coupon List Lite is intended for public offers.
A choice of public promotions
A cart coupon list can make sense when a shopper should discover a current order discount or a shipping offer. Show each offer's conditions and decide whether one selection is enough or a planned pair should be allowed.
A coupon list is different from a code field
A text field lets shoppers type a code they already know. Coupon List Lite displays the active codes you select, with public titles and descriptions, and lets shoppers apply them. It does not add an arbitrary-code input field, replace your cart drawer, or change checkout rules.
You can publish up to 10 offers and configure one or two selections. See the cart discount display or follow the setup steps if that matches your campaign.
Test the complete promotion mix
Account for existing automatic discounts when introducing public codes. Review combination settings and test the exact cart, customer, and code pairing. Our discount combinations guide provides a worked example.
Judge the result by successful discount use, completed orders, and the campaign's margin. More offer clicks alone do not tell you whether the promotion is useful. Review support questions as well: repeated confusion about minimum spend often means the offer explanation needs work.
